Whats a good Fast Motor that will fit in a 84 Trans am?
I’m planning on getting a 1984 Trans Am with a 305 v8. And eventually i wanna put a better (faster) motor in it so can someone help me out. If u can tell me a good tranny that would be good too.
Just found out it has a Pozzy(Prolly Spelt wrong) Rear end, Duel Exhaust, And a Shift kit.
Any 1987 or newer 350 chevy engine would be a good candidate to replace the 305. All 87 and newer 350’s have roller cams and good flow characteristics. Tune port injected motors have good strong mid range and stock will rev to 5500rpm’s. Another motor to consider is the 1991 and newer LT1 or LS1 350’s, although you will need a donor car or after market wiring looms to complete this conversion. The best transmission for this swap will be the 700 R4, but it has to be beefed up to take anything more than 250 horse. Have fun. =)
Another small block Chevy will do just fine. You can get them over 400 cubic inches if you want and it’s a direct bolt in. In you car is an auto trans you can beef it up to take it. It’s the rear you have to worry about. Seriously consider installing weld in frame connectors too.

i recomend a 383 c.i. "crate motor" for this application. it has very good torque and will be a good engine for in town driving provided the camshaft matches the rear end gears.the best tranmission to use should already be in the car. the 700 r-4 trans will be a very good choice if it is rebuilt using stronger roller clutches and sprags. any good tranny shop can upgrade this tranny to handle up to 700 horsepower or so. this is a direct bolt in engine swap and will use standard factory parts to do it.you will have to upgrade the cooling system also.

i am a trained proffessional mechanic with 25 tears experience. these crate motors can be found in any hot rod mag. i reccommend car craft as a regulary read mag. for a beginner.
I like Mikes answer,, and I can see how little living love has some good ideas too. Personally,,,,,,,, I would put 350 heads on the 305 and put a turbo on it,,,,, ha ha ,,.. Seriously,, All of these suggestions hang on one question.. How much money do you have, and how much of it are you willing to spend? I saw a 555 ci motor at a good guys car show in KC. and the motor was the same size as a 350 when it came to block size. That would be too cool.. If I win the lottery,,, Im gonna hve me one.. Grey

700r4 is good for gas milage ita an overdrive but man its a transam get you a 400 sb and a 400 turbo throw in the power.
if i was building it for street strip id find a 2sp power glide to put behind the 400 and pass everything but a gas station lol.
a 383 stroker crate engine wow lol two engines in one huh.
i could take that little old 305 and get the power of the crate motor. after all it just a 350 with a 400 crank and rods in it.
i take the 305 add a 400 crank and 350 head with about a 500 lift cam and get same power as 383 with my stroker!! hey bro its simple find you a wrecked transam with the transam power 400 sbc ram air and 400 tranny!!! and then drive it like burt hehe ya have the true transam
