How many different 350 motors and trans can fit in a 84 Camaro?

I’ve got an 84 z28 with a 305. i need to exactly which motors are interchangeable and will i have to change my ECM. and i wanna go with a 700r4 trans.

the 700r4 is controlled hydraulically so that means you can attach it to any small block chevy and all you have to do is hook up the linkage to the throttle plate. so you can bolt in a new 305, or a 350 or any other small block chevy. theres really no physical difference between the 305 and the 350 on the outside. so the only difference would be to adjust your fuel curve accordingly because of the extra displacement. since yours is an 84 i assume you have tuned port? or even perhaps crossfire injection? anyways i know you have fuel injection because i have an 86 and i have fuel injection and 86 wasnt the first year with EFI. anyways getting back on track. you can fit any transmission and any motor in your car, it all depends how easy you want it to be.

any small block like i said will bolt up (305,307,327,350,400,283) with little to no problems.

as far as the transmissions go, youll want one from a camaro or firebird, because the tailshaft is a different length on trucks and vans with 700r4’s. also you can fit a turbo 350 or even a turbo 400. the only thing u might encounter with this is that youll have to get a special crossmember to hold it up and perhaps a new driveshaft depending on how long your tailshaft is.

now if u wanna swap in a manual transmission, this is where it gets tricky.

borg warner T5’s were the standard for these cars, but they suck, and break all the time if you even abuse them alittle bit. the problem is that you cant swap in a muncie or t10 because of the fact that those transmissions have the clutch operated manually, as opposed to hydraulically like on the T5, but you can swap in a World Class T5 from some camaros, youll have to check what vin code or RPO code it is that shows that the car came with that transmission. it also will bolt up easy like the T5 since it was a stock transmission.

now if u wanna get fancy a T56 from a fourth generation camaro and firebird will fit, but youll have to get all sorts of new stuff. and youll basically need a donor car for all the parts.
