What I am curious about is why this is such an extreme issue with you. It appears that you are stuck on the "equal pay for equal work" statement, and think that women don't want the sh*t jobs.
Get over yourself already! Women have enough crap to put up with everyday, like picking up your dirty underwear off of the floor.
References :
Most definately. Men are expected to be strong and manly. Society expects them to be athletic and muscular and tough. And they are not allowed to show emotions. Women are expected to be graceful and dainty. They are expected to be thin and fashionable. They are expected to smell good and look their best. Personally I'm not into such standards because I can't live up to them. I don't always look my best. I absolutely refuse to wear make-up, and I'm not too graceful. Also, I'm not into athletic guys too much. And I don't want a tough guy. I want one who shows vunerability and emotion. So their standards are pretty pointless to me too. Lets get rid of steriotypes.
References :
There should not be different standards for the sexes. This is telling women that they're not good enough to work with the big boys.
References :
The US Congress has made the decision that women are not "officially" allowed in combat roles in the US military. Both men and women have challenged this decision in court many times, but the courts have said it is Congress's decision, not theirs. Women most likely will not get into many upper rank positions of the military without combat experience. Right now, I think men and women should have to meet the same standards for the military (not all guys are perfect specimen's, either) and they should all have to register for selective service. But until Congress changes from a sexist, protectionist legislative body, that won't happen.

As far as women police officers go, I work right by the police department trainers for our city, and they make every cadet, male and female, perform the same physical and intellectual tasks. If they don't cut it, they're out. Lots of men and women wash out, since it is very difficult work. Male cadets vastly outnumber female cadets. Other than self-fulfilling prophecies, where women think they can't perform such a "tough" job, I don't know why so few women try to get into the field.
References :
Who creates the "standard"? On what is it based?
Is there something wrong with having two standards?

To use your example of which achievements are recognized and rewarded, it becomes clear that our military and police forces are androcentric. Why isn't there a medal for the supply chief, who made sure the victorious unit had enough ammo and rations to get them through their mission? Surely that person was a valued member of the team, and if he had screwed up the entire unit would have died. Tell me that's a less important job...

When you examine the origin of the standard, I think you will find that the emphasis is on some old fart officer's bragging rights, rather than the actual value of the job.

I think those are some pretty twisted values.
References :
We do have two different sets of standards. I enjoy woman's studies, and it has opened my eyes a lot. I hate to say it, but even being educated on discrimination, and experiencing myself on numerous occasions, I still catch myself doing it. Like driving home today from work, I was cut off by some jerk in a big truck. I assumed it was a man, which I discovered driving past, that I was wrong.

So I guess it is more ingrained than I realized in myself, so for people who don't even consider such things....
