Why do so many people put family portraits on display in their homes?

My immediate family never did this. We always used hand-held cameras and pretty much kept photos in the envelope they came in from the developer. And we never used a professional studio. Is this a hallmark of family life? Is it a combination of tradition and pride?
I guess because I live by myself and very privately, I feel like I’m being watched by having photos on display.
We were also very practical and modest. I would choose decorative photos, too.

Life goes by so fast that every now and then we need to stop and smell the roses. The pictures of the past give us fond memories of times before. I have photos of my boys in my home when they were younger, and I pause from time to time to reflect with a smile.
It’s also a great conversation piece when company comes over.

  2. So when they are drunk - they can always refer back to the picture to tell which is who…

  3. I think it is just some people’s preference. I don’t think that it means that your family doesn’t care. Some people don’t like to have their walls cluttered. Now, in my family, and in my own house, I have pictures in my hallway and on a table. But, on my living room walls they are just decorator pics.

  7. I love my family and friends dearly and am proud of them. I display their pictures proudly for all to see. Every picture has a story and a memory.

  8. It can be seen as prideful but I think it is also tradition in some families. We had a few pictures together but never the huge hanging framed photo above the fireplace. I always thought that was weird to look at yourself all the time!
