why when i develop my digital prints is the bottom portion cropped?

I went down to CVS and used a kodak kiosk to create my prints and it crops the bottom of the photos? they were taken in 8 megapixel is that too high should i use 3 mp for a 4×6 or 5×7?

No 8 mp is not too high. Always shoot your images at the highest resolution your camera supports

If you do the math, you will see that the image ratio for a 4×6m 5×7 and 8×10 are different. DSLR’s have sensors with 3:2 ratio, which means they can be printed 4×6 inches without any loss of the image as shot. Other size prints will automatically be cropped at the lab unless you crop them ahead of time. Most P&S cameras have a sensor that is 4:3 ratio, so some cropping is necessary when printing those size prints.

Just remember to rename the file each time you crop to a certain print size … I add 46, 57 and 810 to the end of each file so you do not overwrite the original.
