What’s the best place to print digital photos?

I want good quality prints, but I’ve already cropped all the pictures down to a 4×6 ratio and done colour correction in Photoshop, so I need any photofinishing or stuff like that.

Your local independent lab is always best. They are generally willing to offer a little bit of hands on help. After that try Walgreens or CVS.

If none of those are available then try Dwayne’s, McKenna Pro, Holland or MPIX.

What is a good pixel to inch ratio for printing digital photos?

When I print a photo (say 3×5" or 4×8") what resolution should the photo be in (for optimal image quality)?

For optimal image quality 300ppi (pixels per inch) will be best for most printing processes and the size you are printing at.

If you are using anything more than 4MP, the printer is throwing away most of your image anyway when you print that small.

Think about it… say you have a 6mp camera, just because the math is easier that way! (G) That’s 3000×2000. At 300DPI, that’s 10" by 6.6". So your 3×5 print is not using anywhere near all those pixels.

You will find that most modern printer drivers don’t really need your help. You tell the printer what size you want, feed it paper and ink, and the printer will handle the rest.

Even on large prints, 13×19 or 17×22, it is very rare that you have to mess with anything. Tell the computer and printer what you want, and they will handle the rest.

What’s the best approach to printing/presenting digital photos at large sizes for a gallery show?

I live in NYC and I have a series of digital images at 300dpi and I would like to get high quality professional prints to present in a gallery show, but I have no experience with photo printing. Any ideas for printing services or presentation recommendations?

dpi means absolutely nothing about photo quality or fitness to print at large sizes. I can set a 30×40 pixel photo to 300 dpi…

For gallery prints you will need at least 3000 x 2400 pixels, and more is definitely better. And you will need to have them professionally printed. Be sure to talk to the gallery first, many won’t accept prints unless they were in on the printing process.

If you already have a gallery working with you they likely have a print service company they prefer. And they will dictate the matting and framing they require.

If you don’t have a gallery yet, call a few and ask which print companies they use. They will be glad to recommend the ones they think are best.

How or where can I get digital photos printed to hang on walls?

I’m looking to get digital photos printed out in larger sizes to hang on my walls, with the best quality possible. How should I do this; should I just take them to Walgreens, Walmart, etc. (Has anyone done this and been happy with the quality they received?) I was thinking maybe Wolf/Ritz camera would do it nicer, but I heard they actually use the same machine as Walgreens, Walmart, etc. Any suggestions/recommendations?

http://AdoramaPix.com is the place, they are a professional photo-lab in NY and you can order your prints online and have them ship the prints to you i have used them many times and the quality in my opinion is unbeatable.

they now have a sale on 11×14 prints for only $1.99 each
